Tell Me About The Day Care Industry
In many suburbs demand for subsidised day care places outstrips supply.
There are many differences between the day care centres including fees, opening hours and whether nappies are provided. Some are community based while others are private or home based. Despite this they are all accredited by the National Childcare accreditation council which recognises them as providing very high standards in areas such as the care environment, family support and information and carer/parent relations.
It was interesting to note that these centres charge a wide range of fees anywhere from $67 to $106 per day. Although the government do provide a rebate of 50% to eligible families you can still be paying thousands more each year if you choose the more expensive centres.
Do the more expensive centres provide better care? The answer is no. Research has found that higher fees do not necessarily equate to better care. It is surprising to note that the community based centres actually provide better care as they focus on providing a service rather than making profits. The child to staff ratios at these centres are equivalent to those that are privately run and the staff have the same qualifications as the privately run centres.
How does one go about getting a place in a community based day care centre? It is strongly advisable that you register your baby as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. In addition if you maintain regular contact with the day care centre they are more likely to favour your application.
